What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth that is deemed unrestorable because of severe tooth decay, infection, gum disease or a traumatic event. In some cases, surgery may be required to remove an impacted tooth from below the surface of the gums.

What to Expect

• Before the Procedure

  A tooth extraction can seem like a scary procedure if you don’t know what to expect. Dr. Foote and his caring staff will provide you with information about the procedure before it begins and will remain available to answer any questions you may have. This procedure is fairly common, and you will be given an anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth.

  Dr. Foote may prescribe antibiotics to reduce the infection before the extraction. It is vital to inform the dentist of any medications, heart defects, immune disorders, artificial joints or other health conditions that may put you at risk. Before the procedure, you will be given a questionnaire where you will be able to share this information.

• After the Procedure

  After your tooth is removed, Dr. Foote will immediately apply a gauze pad. Biting on the pad will apply pressure to the socket and reduce the bleeding. Dr. Foote and his staff will also provide you with instructions for caring for the extraction site. Remember to care for your tooth as instructed to avoid further infection or dry socket.

Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure for teenagers and adults in order to avoid complications related to the development of wisdom teeth. In some cases, wisdom teeth can grow in crooked, resulting in pain or infection.
